Leisurely Leah: January Recap

One of my goals for 2020 is to write more blog posts. I really haven’t kept up with this side of things for the last couple of years as I’ve been laser-focused on building my digital media business and less attention has been given to writing blog posts. I’m changing that starting now and will be doing a monthly recap of highlights from the previous month! I cover restaurant openings, new menu items, events, and this year much more travel. Instead of bombarding myself with several posts, why not just one recap?! So here’s what I was up to in January!

The first Friday of the year was spent at PY1, an immersive reality from the creators of Cirque du Soleil that takes you through a sensory journey of laser lights and different worlds where nothing is ordinary and everyone is part of the adventure. Due to popular demand, PY1 has extended its stay in Arlington, TX through the end of February. Show and PY1 Nights tickets can be purchased here

January has been one of my favorite months of the year because it’s when the San Antonio Cocktail Conference is held. This was my third year attending as media and my second year as an official photographer. I love this conference for many reasons. One is I get to meet and see so many new people who are making moves in their city. Bartenders, brand reps, and industry innovators from all over the world fly in for this week-long event and its truly an honor to be in their presence. Second, it’s a wonderful networking opportunity for me. Every year I’m able to make new connections within the beverage industry and many of these turn into future collaborations. And last because of the over the top parties and events that are sponsored by some of the largest alcohol brands! It’s a lot of work for me but the fun certainly makes it all worthwhile! If you are interested in applying for 2021, applications are usually open in November. You can stay up to date on all things SACC here

One part about my job that I absolutely love is having the opportunity to attend Off-Broadway and touring shows. I finally was given the chance to see Blue Man Group here in Dallas and it was incredible! Adult humor, audience involvement, comedy, drama, music, and multiple jaw-dropping, colorful moments made for a wonderful evening! If you’ve never seen Blue Man Group, I highly encourage you to do so! They’re currently on a North American and world tour so take a peek and see if they’re coming to a city near you!

Obviously, a huge part of my daily life is covering restaurants and cocktails in and around Dallas. Here are a few that I was particularly excited about!

Original ChopShop just opened a location minutes from me and I couldn’t be happier! Their juices are some of my favorites and I literally pass it almost every day! To have a healthy eating option that’s convenient is something I’m definitely on board with.

Another healthy spot just added some winter menu items too. Malibu Poke got seasonal with additions like Hot Garlic Ramen Noodles and a Coconut Curry Sweet Potato Bowl. They’re a go-to for me when those poke cravings hit!

Being a born and raised Texas gal, BBQ is always an exciting thing to talk about! I finally was able to carve (pun intended) out time to head north to McKinney, TX and eat all the things at Local Yocal BBQ and Grill. Little did I know I’d also be drinking all the things (which I had zero issues with)! Their cocktail menu is extensive and impressive. For me to say that, y’all know it’s the absolute truth. I had Wagyu Brisket for the first time and am forever changed as a human. There’s also a mammoth of a burger called The Hamilton, (I’ll be including this on another post in more detail in the next week or so) that every meat-loving Texan simply must sink their teeth into. It’s a smalltown feel with city elegance and their attention to detail is unmatched. This is a must in my book, y’all!

One of my all-time favorite areas of Dallas is Trinity Groves. You get some of the most stunning views of the skyline with several dining and drinking options all in one spot. One of these places is Saint Roccos. I’ve seen this place for years and it was always one of those spots that I’d think…one day I really gotta eat here…well I finally did just that! I was so impressed with their team, the ambiance, the food, the cocktails, and even the other guests! Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and I really did feel like I was having dinner with family. I highly recommend eating here often! Order Melita’s Meatball! It’s huge and stuffed with cheese! After dinner head upstairs to the balcony and enjoy a cocktail while taking in the gorgeous Dallas skyline!

So there you have it! The first month of the year was a memorable one! Y’all be sure to come back and see what I’ve been up to in February!

xxoo Leah
